Welcome to Laboratory for Motor Learning Control

The Institute emphasizes flexible, interdisciplinary research and works to increase cooperation between government, industry and academia and is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Initially, the Institute established three areas of research: Understanding the Brain, Protecting the Brain and Creating the Brain with internal research support provided by the Advanced Technology Development Center. In 2002, this Center was separated into the Advanced Technology Development Group, which focuses on developing new materials and research technology, and the Research Resources Center, which provides internal research support. In April 2003, the Institute initiated a new research theme called Nurturing the Brain.

The Institute is housed in three buildings on the Wako Campus and has approximately 40,000 square meters of laboratory and common space. Currently, over 400 researchers and staff are employed at the Institute of whom 20% are foreign. In addition, RIKEN BSI supports almost 300 research fellows and visiting research scientists.
